"Great concept, durability problems" 2010-10-09

I've had this case for quite a while now. The design is really good if you are looking for a folio-style case that is about as thin as possible. The outer material is some kind of slightly rubbery (grippy, in a good way) black plastic material with a faux carbon fiber sort of pattern. It is of course not carbon fiber. This faux carbon material is really some kind of fabric on the side you don't see, with the rubbery carbon pattern on the outside.
It attaches to the iPad with four snap-fit corner pieces on the back, which holds the iPad very snugly. The back interior is a very thin sort of felt or micro-suede material (I'll just call it "felt" from here on, whatever it really is). The exterior back is hard plastic contoured to the iPad, covered with the faux carbon. In fact, the faux carbon material is glued to the hard plastic shell.
The front folds over folio-style, and has the now standard extra fold crease, and a tuck tab, that allows it to form a triangle, either for a low-profile "keyboard input" orientation, or a more vertical "movie watching" orientation. The faux carbon material is one wrap-around piece covering the back and the front. The front cover is also felt-lined inside, has some kind of plastic interior card for a suitable amount of stiffness. The inner and outer material is stitched together around the front cover's edge. The inner lining does attract dust and cat hair, etc., but not excessively, and a lint roller takes care of that.
All of this works very well functionally. It seems to be about as thin and light as possible for a folio case -- certainly thinner than the leather/faux-leather folios that add more bulk. I think it provides the perfect amount of protection for slipping the iPad into a briefcase or backpack, or carrying it without the iPad being conspicuous.
But after a couple months of regular use now, the build material and a sort of design/construction flaw is making the case look a bit frayed and ragged. The outer front cover edge of the faux carbon fabric is fraying just a little bit, nothing serious. But the main problem is that the inner hinge area (which is just the faux carbon fabric, with the felt glued to it on the inside) seems to inevitably separate with all the repeated hinge flexing. The result is that the inside hinge looks like it's falling apart when you flip the cover around the back to use the iPad on a flat surface or at either of the angled positions. The inside back edge of the hinge area is actually starting to pull away from the back. Functionally it still seems pretty sturdy, but the hinge looks like it is totally falling apart and is definitely a little bit weaker due to the separation.

I was looking forward to replace my apple case with this one. On the positive side, the case looks nice and feels better that the Apple case. However, it has a couple of huge problems. First, the build quality is suspect. The interior lining of the case started peeling off immediately. Unbelievable. Second, the mechanism used to prop the case into the stand position is flimsy and difficult to attach. It is also pliable, so I expect at some point to will wear out and no longer hold the case up.
In summary, a knock-off class case at a top-of-the price. I would recommend this case if it was under $20. Not for $50+.

This is the very first product review I have ever decided to actually write. I have been purchasing things from Amazon for years now and this is the very first thing I researched and went ahead with in spite of the poor reviews. Now... I am completely kicking myself!
I use my iPad for everything and I love it. I take extremely good care of it and never treat it rough. The reason I say this is due to the fact that this case is absolutely falling apart. Let me give you a breakdown:
Day of arrival:
- I carefully unboxed the item and placed my iPad into the case.
- Approximately 1 hour later I noticed that the edges seem to be fraying.
- I took my iPad out of the case and carefully used a lighter to burn the edges of the thread. (Note: Never pull threads, this will only cause more threads to unravel.)
Second day of ownership:
- More threads needed to be seared.
- Even more threads need to be seared.
Third thru 10th day of ownership:
- More and more threads keep coming un raveled.
11th day of ownership:
- Other than the constant burning of threads, the folding binder of the case starts separating. (The felt is separating from the fake leather backing.)
15th day of ownership: (Today)
- The threads are completely under control.
- The place where the binding meets the back of the hard shell that holds the iPad is now peeling off.
- In other words, soon the flap that covers the iPad will soon be ripped off the case.
For over 40.00... This case should be lasting much longer than half a month. If you are thinking about buying this case because of it's sleek design and really nice way the iPad is connected... DON'T!!!!!!!!!!
Please take my word for it and stay far away from this case. It is absolutely highway robbery.

We purchased this folio for our iPad to provide some protection and a means to stand it up for viewing without holding it. It serves both of those purposes very well. Here are the details:
1) It is made of plastic with a faux "carbon fiber" appearance. It's actually pretty attractive.
2) It holds the iPad with plastic clips in the four corners. It doesn't look like they would be very secure, but the appearance is deceptive. They are VERY effective at retaining the iPad.
3) It fits the shape/size of the iPad very closely with very little (actually almost no) overhang off the edges of the iPad. This is a mixed blessing. Little overhang means that if it is dropped, the impact may be on a corner or edge of the iPad if it lands wrong. However, given that it fits the contour of the iPad so closely, it also reduces bulk when you hold the folio/iPad combination in your hands and it allows the iPad with folio to easily fit inside of any carry bags that are sized for the iPad. Some folios add so much bulk, you would have to take the iPad out of them to put it into a carrying bag.
4) There is a hinge in the front cover a couple of inches from one edge. If you fold the front cover around to the back of the folio, a tongue on the front cover fits into a pocket on the back so that the middle hinge is folded. This forces the front and back covers to form a triangle for propping the iPad up. You can either stand it up tall like a TV or turn it around to stand it up at the correct angle for viewing it hands free on your lap or looking down at it on the table while you eat breakfast (as I frequently do).
5) The inside is lined with a felt-like fabric to prevent scratching. This posed the only problem with the product. The fabric is in two pieces... one inside the front cover and one inside the back There is about an eighth of an inch of overlap between the two pieces of fabric that is sealed with a little adhesive on the back of the overlapping piece. That adhesive let go in just under two days allowing that overlap piece to start curling up. I used a bit of real glue (binary epoxy... that stuff will glue anything forever) to glue that overlap down and have had no problems since.
Overall, I am very happy with this product. I recommend it. Watch the overlap between the two pieces of liner fabric... if gives way, just use a good glue to put it back down.

I reviewed all of the iPad cases that were for sale at the time of purchase and selected this one because it looked like the best quality case and met my needs. I fly a lot so I was looking for a case that could hold a boarding pass, passport and headphones. I choose this case because it said it had a pocket on the outside of the front cover, hence the name "Traveler". It showed up (finally) and did not. I was so disappointed that I went back to the ad on here only to find it completely changed. This was NOT the product that I thought I was ordering. On top of that, this case is made out of plastic and while I will never put my iPad into it, I am sure it would last made a week before falling apart. Absolutely terrible, big fail to the people that make this piece of garbage. I requested a refund and was told not unless it was defective. I thought that not being what I ordered and being useless would be defective enough.
